Aims and achievements

Aims

Our main research aims are to:

  • Increase understanding of cognitive and behavioural characteristics of neurodegenerative disorders to improve diagnosis and management of patients
  • Investigate the neurobiological basis for these conditions to improve prospects for treatment
  • Study the specific processes involved in language, memory and other cognitive functions

Achievements

The CFU has played a central role in the:

  • Identification and characterisation of non-Alzheimer forms of dementia
  • Identification of the link between frontotemporal dementia and motor neurone disease
  • Development of international clinical and pathological diagnostic criteria for diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and other forms of focal cerebral degeneration
  • Identification of genetic mutations associated with familial frontotemporal dementia.
