Aims
Our main research aims are to:
- Increase understanding of cognitive and behavioural characteristics of neurodegenerative disorders to improve diagnosis and management of patients
- Investigate the neurobiological basis for these conditions to improve prospects for treatment
- Study the specific processes involved in language, memory and other cognitive functions
Achievements
The CFU has played a central role in the:
- Identification and characterisation of non-Alzheimer forms of dementia
- Identification of the link between frontotemporal dementia and motor neurone disease
- Development of international clinical and pathological diagnostic criteria for diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia and other forms of focal cerebral degeneration
- Identification of genetic mutations associated with familial frontotemporal dementia.
