Dr Alexander Gerhard

Dr Alexander Gerhard completed his medical training at the University of Bonn, Germany, before specialising in Neurology and completing an MD on molecular electrophysiology. He has worked as a Clinical Research Fellow at the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre, Imperial College London, and in 2008 took up the position of Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre.

Dr Gerhard has carried out extensive research on Positron Emission Tomography (PET) neuroimaging in a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s & Huntington’s disease, cortico-basal degeneration, Multi-System-Atrophy and Stroke.

He continues to pursue his special interests in Neuroinflammation in neurological and psychiatric disorders and is currently co-supervising a number of PhD and MD projects. He has research collaborations at Imperial College London and the Neurodis Fondation, University of Lyon, France.

In addition to his research activities, Dr Gerhard is an Honorary Consultant in Neurology at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, where he conducts specialist clinics in neurodegeneration, including Parkinsonian disorders and early-onset dementias.
